POLICE are urging everyone to be bike-safe for Safe Cycle Month.
The joint initiative, between VicRoads and police aims to raise awareness of bicycle safety and reduce bike-related trauma on the roads.
There will be free safety activities, which includes free bicycle identification engraving and online chat sessions.
In the CBD, bike patrol squads will speak to cyclists about safety issues, and enforcing road rules on key cycling routes.
Bicycle coordinator Sgt Arty Lavos said drivers and pedestrians need to play their part in bike safety.
“It’s essential that our roads are safe places for all road users, especially our vulnerable road users such as cyclists,” he said.
“It’s October, the weather is warming up and we are seeing even more cyclists get out on the bike.”
This year’s theme is preparation, with police urging cyclists to prepare for their journeys and drivers to prepare to be aware of cyclists on the road.
Police will be part of Ride to Work Day on October 12 and Around the Bay in a Day on October 16, where they will be offering free bicycle identification engraving.
